Marmoucha is a tribe of the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco. Marmoucha rugs are handwoven by the tribes women, using wool from the mountain sheep. Among the higher elevations of the Middle Atlas mountains, the Marmoucha people endure heavy snowfall and extremely cold conditions. This results in a quality of wool like no other – the thick, shaggy pile of a Marmoucha rug has a soft, sumptuous finish that has to be felt to be believed.
These handmade berber rugs are completely unique, all telling a story steeped in culture and superstition. These stories can be read through the symbols woven by the artisans. This rug features lozenge or diamand shapes which represent protection. Within those lozenges are eight point stars meant to capture evil spirits.
